With all the mayors being arrested last month...

With all the mayors being arrested last month, you almost get the feeling that the tides might be turning against public corruption down here in Miami Dade County.  Not so fast though, this isn't the first time a sitting mayor has gotten arrested down here, unfortunately the people handling these cases down here have nasty habit of bungling them.  Case in point, former South Miami mayor Horace Feliu who was arrested back in 2004...
Horace Feliu, who became South Miami's mayor in November, was arrested Monday night on suspicion of elections fraud, city officials said.
Feliu, 50, was charged with receiving a late contribution, receiving a contribution of more than $500, and receiving a contribution in a public building -- all misdemeanors, South Miami police spokesman Charles Barzek said.
What's worse than the lame ass case they put together against Feliu was the timing of the arrest...
His arrest comes a day before a city election in which he was seeking another term.
Feliu was finishing the term of former Mayor Julio Robaina, who is now a state representative.
Feliu's vice mayor, Mary Scott Russell, said she was surprised by the allegations.
"The night before an election, this is the last thing you want to hear. I wanted to win a fair fight," Russell added.
Anyone notice the similarities between Mr. Feliu's arrest and the spate of recent mayoral arrests?  While Mr. Feliu's arrest came the day before the election, the other mayors arrested recently, Pizzi, Maroño and Bateman, were all arrested just as their respective campaign seasons were about to start.

With that said, before we start getting all excited about these guys getting convicted, let's not forget how things ended up for Mr. Feliu, who not only was acquitted of all charges in court but then went on to serve two more terms as mayor of South Miami and sued the state attorney and three county investigators...

Another thing to consider is the timing of Homestead mayor Steve Bateman's arrest.  The state attorney's office has known about Mr Bateman's misdeeds for years and turned a blind eye to him.  Is it possible that the feds arresting Pizzi and Maroño shamed the sao into arresting Bateman after years of inaction in order to save face?

  1. Please research OMC involvement in Feliu's case. Even back then he was already doing his misdeeds.

    1. What hard evidence is there of OMC’s involvement in the Feliu arrest? None. Just that familiar odor.
      1. OMC had been informed of Feliu's arrest in advance by the FDLE. Did OMC tell anyone else? No idea.
      2. Valerie Newman Hurley told her friends the exact date of Feliu’s arrest months in advance. Who told her? No idea.
      3. The guy who gave Feliu the big check inside city hall was Laz Parking owner Ron Stroyne. That's the same Ron Stroyne who showed up at OMC's recent ethics hearing to support OMC. That's the same Laz Parking that got the city parking contract when OMC operated the city's parking division. Any connection between OMC and Stroyne? No idea.

  2. During the:Special Commission Meeting
    August 14, 2013, 7:00 PM
Where Mayor Stoddard sponsored a Resolution of the City of South Miami confirming the City Commission's prior interpretation of the City Charter, the City Commission's prior approval of all appointments of Orlando Martinez de Castro to the office of Acting City Manager and approving the termination of his 5-year employment agreement with the City under the terms of Florida Constitution Article II, Section 5(a). 3/5 Both Mary Scott Russell and Horace Feliu where in the chambers. Feliu spoke some words of nothing and Scott-Russell just watched? Why where they there? And why NOT did Scott-Russell speak out on such an important city item? Also city words has it that Feliu was willing to take the City Managers position for one goal in mind (wonder what that goal was)and if given to him he would have had no problem in removing OMC as COP. In addition city talk has it that Newman was on Feliu's shit-list also - anyone know what that is all about?

  4. Citizen Newman was on the front lines of the FPL opposition back in the day when Mayor Feliu was advocating for FPL's Turkey Point expansion and accepting campaign donations from FPL. The "three amigos" (Stoddard, Harris, and Welsh) are still defending the city from FPL's proposed transmission lines and nuclear expansion, but Newman left the fight and now argues against opposing FPL. Liebman has been too busy with the important work of defending OMC and bashing the "three amigos" to pay attention to such trivial matters.

    1. Is it not Amazing what a seat on the cities commission will do to the ego of a Theatrics Fine Arts major? lol
Liebman tries to copycat Newman but does not have the "Set" to remotely match the venom that Newman discharges. But lets give Liebman his just-deserves Liebman can and is very convincing when he cries on the Dias. I thought he was gonna have a f*cken melt-down on more then one occasion?? Mental meltdown Liebman poor guy got it mixed up. He accused a resident of spreading rumors of an alleged DUI - Hell if he had not Publicly made the statements during the City Commission Meeting and while on the Dias the city residence nor the world would not have known of that crap, Liebman You DUMB-Ass cry baby!!! lol And he demands that the city residents pay for his legal defense to go against a city resident? We demand that you Lieman grow a SET and stop the leaking and dribbling on the Dias - you are paid to take care of city business and not use the Dias as your therapeutic session.

    2. what trash writing. The Mayor of South Miami continues to knowingly give his followers erroneous information, in this case the DUI, that is how the sick Mayor operates. Fortunately, people are beginning to find that there is something very wrong in the mind of the wacky professor, we all there is already something wrong with the welsh and the harris, so it was difficult for the Mayor to manipulate their brainless minds

  5. Mike, look to whats happening in Sweetwater and connect the dots. Both OMC and Lopez oozed out of that pimple.

  6. More like squeezed out of the pimple. Lopez bailed while under investigation by the States Attorney for beating an 18 year old prisoner inside the Sweetwater PD so severely that he needed emergency surgery to repair his liver and kidney. Before they assaulted him, a gang of 4 Sweetwater cops that included Lopez had used Mayor Marono's car to drive the kid around. When the SAO and Sweetwater IA opened up parallel investigations Lopez was suspended and needed out of Sweetwater ASAP. OMC needed a cop like Lopez so he scooped up the fish for the SMPD - what a catch. That's why Lopez still refers to OMC as "Papa". But the story takes an even stranger twist. KFR's crew not only lets Lopez off, but they allow him to work at the Miami States Attorney's Office while on the SMPD payroll. If this were fiction, it would defy belief, but this is Miami, bitches... check it out, starting here:

  9. Rumor has it Mayor Stodard and his stooges sitting next to him are under investigation and possibly they will be sweeped away in handcuffs. If this is true, it is apparent what goes around comes around, and the City of South Miami will be mentioned in the same breath with Miami Lakes, Sweetwater, Homestead. I say it is about time, too bad this blog does not give the whole truth, wonder why that is strawbuyer?

    2. Oh, but haven't you heard? Com. Harris attends the League of Cities meetings, and you know what goes on there. Com. Welsh accepts free ketchup with his tacos at Taco Bell. And I heard the mayor often takes a toothpick from the dispenser at a certain SoMi restaurant without offering to pay for it.

    3. How many free meals does Stoddard, his wife, and Brainless Harris receive downtown, and do they report it, LOL, LOL. Now the Mayor wants an increase in his salary as Mayor? As I see it, Stodard owes the city money for all the lawsuits he created that will ultimately fall on the South Miami taxpayer, and his followers thought Feliu was bad, not even close! Bring back Feliu or Robaina, you don't know what you have until you lose it. Anyone know how the Stodard got so many campaign contributions and where the money went to other than the normal mailers, etc etc etc?????? Doesn't the Mayor know that his sidekick Welsh proclaims our city is not for sale, if not, Welsh needs to put a flyer in Stodard's mailbox and inform him, lol, lol

  10. OK. let's answer those stupid questions:

    1. "How many free meals does Stoddard, his wife, and Brainless Harris receive downtown, and do they report it"

Harris and I (Stoddard) receive two free meals annually. The Drug-Free Coalition and Chamber South invite local officials to lunch at Carraba's.
My wife? Zero. No, Harris and I don't report these lunches because the cash value of the lunch falls below the reporting threshold.

    2. "Now the Mayor wants an increase in his salary as Mayor?"

Nope. Listen to the recording of the budget meeting. I suggested the voters should decide the salaries of elected officials rather than the officials themselves. Just for information, working as mayor, I make less than $13.50 an hour, but at least it's never dull.

    3. "As I see it, Stodard owes the city money for all the lawsuits he created that will ultimately fall on the South Miami taxpayer."

OMC has filed lawsuits against the city and two members of the commission. Newman's zoning vote precipitated a $26 million lawsuit against the city. Maybe OMC and Newman should pay the city's legal costs.

    4. "...and his followers thought Feliu was bad, not even close! Bring back Feliu or Robaina, you don't know what you have until you lose it."

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, though the opinion of a registered South Miami voter counts for something.

    5. "Anyone know how the Stodard got so many campaign contributions and where the money went to other than the normal mailers, etc etc etc?????? "

Sure, it's in the campaign reports - all public record. Knock yourself out.

    6. "Doesn't the Mayor know that his sidekick Welsh proclaims our city is not for sale, if not, Welsh needs to put a flyer in Stodard's mailbox and inform him, lol, lol"

Unlike the idiot who posted this pile of nonsense, Bob Welsh knows that only the US Postal Service is allowed to put materials in a residential mailbox.
